Winstrol (Stanozolol / Stz)

Stanozolol (abbrev. Stz), sold under many brand names, is a synthetic androgen and anabolic steroid (AAS) medication derived from dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It is used to treat hereditary angioedema.

Stanozolol was developed by Winthrop Laboratories (Sterling Drug) in 1962, and has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for human use, though it is no longer marketed in the United States. It is also used in veterinary medicine.

The drug has mostly been discontinued and is now available in only a few countries. It is given by mouth in humans and by injection into muscle in animals.

Medical Applications

Stanozolol has been used with some success to treat venous insufficiency. It stimulates blood fibrinolysis and has been evaluated for treating advanced skin changes in venous disease, such as lipodermatosclerosis.

Several randomized trials have noted:

  • Improvement in lipodermatosclerosis

  • Reduced skin thickness

  • Possibly faster ulcer healing rates

It is also being studied to treat:

  • Hereditary angioedema

  • Osteoporosis
